Larry W. Kwak, MD
MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX
Clinical Title: Adoptive Immunotherapy with Donor Tumor Idiotype-specific T-Cells
Description: Dr. Kwak is currently involved in a Gateway-funded Phase II clinical trial that involves a novel immune therapy for patients with difficult-to-treat blood cancers, such as myeloma. He and his team are working with pairs of siblings who have already been involved in successful stem cell transplants to treat myeloma. Healthy individuals are first safely vaccinated with a highly purified myeloma protein to induce a healthy immune response, then they donate highly-enriched specific T-cells to strengthen their brother’s or sister’s immune system and increase the chance of survival. At the halfway point, the study is already yielding favorable outcomes as a type of personalized therapy recognizing the unique complexity of cancer cells.
